Islington Pianos goes Global

Birmingham Piano Tuner

Islington Pianos owner and head technician Steve Droy is travelling to Mumbai to work at the Con Brio piano festival later this month, July 2011.

His concert tuning skills are already in great demand in this country but now the word has spread further afield.

The festival is sponsored by Furtados Music, the largest retailer of musical instruments in India.

Furtados are the proud owners of a prestigious Steinway Model D Concert Grand Piano.

"It is the only one in the country and the first one in India for 40 years. It is a great honour to be invited to tune such a magnificent piano", says Steve Droy.

Unfortunately there is no tradition of training concert tuners in India, so they have to look to western technicians with the training and experience to deal with the demands of tuning on the Concert stage. This superb piano, cost well over £100,000 and took 450 people a year to produce.

Pianists from around the world will play a selection of pieces over the week including Liszt`s Hungarian Rhapsody No.19 and Brahms’ Six Piano Pieces (Op. 118).

The highlight of the festival will be the performance of Glazunov’s Festive Cantata for solo voices, women’s chorus and 2 piano 8 hands. The score for this work has been retrieved from the archives of the Belaieff Foundation specially for the festival. There are no recordings of this work and no documentation of a performance in recent history was found.

Running the competition during the monsoon season could present some problems, as high humidity affects the instruments tuning stability.

"I am really looking forward to the challenges of the weeks and to meeting some of the finest pianists in the world" said Steve. "Interest in the acoustic piano is very high, all over the world at the moment, especially in developing economies like India and China."

Islington Pianos will be holding talks aimed at maintaining working links with Furtados Music in the future.
